Andrew Cook, 2016–2017 vice president of advocacy, is a senior at Brigham Young University (BYU) studying public relations. A life-long Buckeye, born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, he has enjoyed his college home in Provo, Utah where the mountain landscape provides endless opportunities for adventure.
Following his freshman year at BYU, Cook took a two-year leave of absence from school to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in South Texas’s Rio Grande Valley. Through his missionary service he became fluent in Spanish and gained a passion for understanding diverse cultures.
Cook first discovered PRSSA during his sophomore year after being invited to attend a PRSSA meeting by a professor. As a BYU PRSSA Chapter member he spent his sophomore year as a member of the public relations and awards committees. As a junior, he served as the Chapter’s vice president of awards/historian, supervising all Chapter awards applications and documenting Chapter activities.
In addition to studying public relations, Cook has participated in projects and coursework through BYU’s Ballard Center for Economic Self-Reliance. He has also founded the Los Invisibles Film project, traveling to document the stories of immigrant families living along the U.S-Mexico border in South Texas.
Cook loves working in the sports industry as a sports information director for BYU Athletics. He considers his participation in the UpTern Accelerate Program, with the Atlanta-based creative agency the Barjon Group, his most valuable professional experience as a student.
Cook loves spending time with friends or family at home in Ohio, Texas, or Utah, or traveling between the three. In his spare time he enjoys visiting art museums, baking chocolate chip cookies and playing tennis.
