Andrew Cook, 2017–2018 PRSSA national president, is a senior at Brigham Young University (BYU) studying public relations with a minor in global business. While his college sports loyalties are divided between the Cougars and the Buckeyes, Cook was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio but he has enjoyed his college home in Provo, Utah where the mountain landscape provides endless opportunities for adventure.
Following his freshman year at BYU, Cook took a two-year leave of absence from school to serve as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in South Texas’s Rio Grande Valley. Through his missionary service he became fluent in Spanish and gained a passion for understanding diverse cultures.
Cook first discovered PRSSA during his sophomore year after being invited to attend a PRSSA meeting by his professor, Dr. Christopher Wilson. As a BYU PRSSA Chapter member he served as a member of the public relations and awards committees and as the Chapter’s vice president of awards/historian.
Cook served on the 2016-17 PRSSA National Committee as vice president of advocacy. In addition to attending the PRSSA National Conference in Indianapolis and National Assembly in Seattle with his fellow National Committee members, some of his favorite memories from the year include traveling to Peru visit the PRSSA Chapter at Universidad de San Martin de Porres, attending a regional conference at the University of Nevada, Reno and working with the National Advocacy Subcommittee.
Cook loves working in the sports industry as a sports information director for BYU Athletics and also works as the public relations specialist for BYU’s Ballard Center for Economic Self-Reliance. He enjoys working to help students examine global social issues and learn how to “Do good. Better.” He considers his participation in the UpTern Accelerate Program with the Atlanta-based creative agency the Barjon Group and a summer study abroad at Oxford University to be two of his most valuable professional experiences as a student.
Cook loves spending time with friends or family at home in Ohio, Texas or Utah, or traveling between the three. In his spare time he enjoys visiting art museums, baking chocolate chip cookies and playing tennis.
