BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Nov. 11, 2016) — Members of the Beth Wood Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) at Indiana University hosted alumni at a networking dinner in Indianapolis on Oct. 23. Members were in the city for the PRSSA 2016 National Conference, “Crossroads of America.” They met with alumni in the PRSA Hoosier Chapter to celebrate relationship month.
Ten current members of PRSSA attended the dinner at the Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery as well as 2014 graduate Becca Arrington and 2016 graduate Joe Knight.
The alumni shared their post-grad experiences and reminisced on their time spent at Indiana University and in PRSSA.
“I miss the community of PRSSA the most and seeing my PRSSA friends every day,” said Becca Arrington. “It was a support system unlike anything else.”
Members also had the opportunity to ask the alumni questions about their careers and experiences. They received tips on how to apply for jobs as well as what post-grad life is like as a young public relations professional. Additionally, attendees learned about different areas of the public relations industry. They heard about Arrington’s experiences changing from agency to corporate public relations and learned about tourism public relations from Knight.
“I found the dinner very helpful,” said Ben Houston, IU PRSSA Chapter member. “Anytime you can hear about experience from the outside world is something you can really take to heart.”
After graduation, Arrington started off working for Dittoe PR and is currently working at Finish Line in corporate public relations. At Finish Line, Arrington handles internal communications and the company’s corporate social responsibility account, where she assists with the creation of social media content for the Finish Line Youth Foundation.
Knight is working in tourism public relations at Downtown Indy, Inc. He is currently working on promoting the city’s upcoming event, the Circle of Lights. The Circle of Lights is a holiday tree and light display illumination that is held in the center of Indianapolis at Monument Circle. Over 100,000 people are expected to attend this annual event.
The alumni attended the dinner to catch up with younger PRSSA members and to provide guidance for those about to enter the field.
“I wanted to see everyone again and be with friends,” said Joe Knight. “I like trying to help other people with their futures; I feel like I’m doing something right.”
The dinner was part of an alumni relations initiative started in 2015. It was created to reconnect Chapter alumni with current members to provide a network of support and advice.

It was renamed in her honor after her passing in 2009. The Chapter is dedicated to enabling IU students to explore and prepare for careers in public relations. The Chapter has been recognized as a Star Chapter by PRSSA National and has one of the largest memberships in the nation. Members are provided with professional development and networking opportunities. The experiences and resources offered by the Chapter enable students to build their portfolios and enter the field as qualified, sought-after young professionals.
