OSHKOSH, Wis. (Dec. 8, 2016) — Members of The Dr. Julie Henderson Public Relations Student Society of America Chapter at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh gained media relations experience by volunteering for Red Shoes PR, an agency from Appleton, Wisconsin, at the Community First Fox Cities Marathon presented by Miron Construction on Sept. 16 –18.
Students gained media relations experience by shadowing live and taped interviews with local TV stations and publications, corralling sources, gathering runners after they crossed the finish line, escorting runners to the media tent and making trips to the timing tent to get unofficial result times.
This is the first time that the Chapter has coordinated with Red Shoes PR, and it’s the first time the agency has worked with student volunteers. UW Oshkosh PRSSA members enjoyed the hands-on learning.
“You can only learn so much about media relations while sitting in a classroom,” said President of the UW Oshkosh PRSSA Katie Biersach. “I loved being able to get students out there in the real world for just a short amount of time. I am also very happy that the Chapter strengthened their relationship with Red Shoes PR because it could open up doors for more opportunities in the future.”
The collaboration idea sparked from an agency tour that the organization did last spring at Red Shoes PR.
“During our agency tour, members asked Red Shoes employees what they didn’t get out of their education, and the employees agreed that they lacked media relations experience,” said UW Oshkosh PRSSA Vice President of Events Carissa Brezinski. “This experience gave our Chapter the opportunity to see how media relations tactics are actually executed in a professional setting.”
