EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (Jan. 31, 2017) — Members of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) visited Weber Shandwick’s St. Louis office on Nov. 4. The visit gave members a chance to see what it is like working in a global public relations firm.
Rachel Yann, an SIUE alumna and former PRSSA–SIUE Chapter member who now works at Weber Shandwick, gave members a tour of the firm. Afterward, the members sat down with seven of Weber Shandwick’s public relations professionals, including Yann, for an informal Q&A session.
Desiree Bainbridge, PRSSA- SIUE vice president, said the opportunity made her upcoming graduation and prospect of starting her own career even more exciting.
“It was great to hear from people that currently work in the industry,” Bainbridge said. “It was also great to see someone who graduated from SIUE working there. It made the possibility of working in an agency realistic. When I left from the tour I felt more assured about my future.”
During the Q&A, students asked questions about daily life working in a public relations firm. One student asked professionals to share one tip they wished they had learned in the classroom. Several of the public relations professionals responded with time management and computer skills.
“I always understood the importance of time management, but I didn’t realize how essential computer competence is, especially in Microsoft Excel,” Yann said. “I don’t think as PR students we realize how much we will use programs like that.”
The students appreciated the advice and look forward to putting it into practice as they prepare for their future careers.
In spring 2017, the PRSSA–SIUE Chapter plans on visiting another public relations firm in the St. Louis area to gain more insight.
